On July 21, 1930, the Board of Directors of the La Crosse Trust Company, at the urging of the La Crosse County Bar Association, adopted a Resolution and Declaration of Trust creating the La Crosse Community Trust.
In 1942, the first bequest was made by Alice O. Gordon to the La Crosse Community Trust. The first distribution committee met on March 10, 1942 and included: John Felton, Henry Gund, Eva Wolf, Joseph Bartle, and Harry Spence.
On June 17, 1946 the first general grant of $200 was made.
The Community Trust joined the National Council on Community Foundations in 1959.
In December 1962, the La Crosse Community Trust changed its name to the La Crosse Foundation.
On March 17, 1988, the Foundation Distribution Committee approved a restated Resolution and Declaration of Trust, changing the Distribution Committee to a Board of Directors.
In May of 1991, the name was officially changed to La Crosse Community Foundation.
Today, the Community Foundation has over $59 million in assets and has granted over $21.5 million in grants, scholarships, and distributions since the first grant of $200.
