How To Establish A Fund At The La Crosse Community Foundation
Endowments represent a donor’s hopes and dreams for a continuing philanthropy in their home town or a desire to support the mission of their favorite charity. The process of establishing a fund in perpetuity is more than a single act of philanthropy; it is a step-by-step process that begins with understanding a donors charitable goals.
-
Clarify Your Charitable Intent
Most donors begin by clarifying their charitable intent or vision. What is the donor trying to accomplish over the long term? Does the donor hope to address a defined issue within our community, to help a specific group, or to provide ongoing support for a broad set of organizations working in areas of interest to the donor? Donors also need to consider the role they and their families want to play now and in the future of their fund.
Shape Your Own Charitable Gift Fund
Answers to these and other important questions about charitable intent point the donor towards the most appropriate fund type. Donors can shape a charitable gift fund to meet their specific interests.
Choose The Most Appropriate Way To Give
Once a donor has structured an individual fund to address a particular vision or chosen to add to an existing fund, the donor chooses the most appropriate way to grow the fund. These strategies involve choosing the best asset to give as well as the best timing for that gift, either today or through an estate plan.
Philanthropic Services For You And Your Advisors
In addition to helping donors clarify their charitable intent, shape a fund and choose the most eff ective way to give, the Foundation offers information to help donors identify specific charitable organizations doing work in their area of interest and help evaluate agencies they currently support.
Charitable Giving Tools
The La Crosse Community Foundation offers the chance for donors to utilize the full spectrum of charitable giving toolsfrom outright gifts of cash and appreciated securities to bequests and charitable remainder truststhat can provide life-income and estate planning advantages.
Unrestricted Funds:
Through unrestricted funds, donors enable the Foundation to respond to the community’s most pressing challenges in creative and flexible ways. Unrestricted funds are some of the Foundation’s most important, flexible resources to address the ever-changing needs of a dynamic community.
Donor Advised Funds:
A donor advised fund provides the advantages of an endowment fund as well as access to the professional grant making staff of the Foundation. With a donor advised fund, you receive professional guidance about different nonprofit organizations and projects that support the causes that are important to you. These funds provide donors the opportunity to establish a named fund and remain actively engaged in the grant making process. Donor advised funds are an efficient alternative to private family foundations.
Supporting Organizations:
A growing number of donors with significant charitable assets who desire to have a more formal gifting structure are establishing supporting organizations. As with donor advised funds, a supporting organization is an effective alternative to a private foundation.
Field Of Interest Funds:
These funds enable individuals and groups to pool their charitable gifts of any size into a common fund that addresses an issue of importance. Earnings from these funds are distributed in accordance with each fund’s specific purpose. Scholarships are an example of a Field of Interest Fund.
Designated Funds:
At the time a designated fund is established, the donor designates a specific charitable organization(s) as the perpetual recipient(s) of the earnings from the fund. The Foundation ensures that the designated recipients receive support as long as they remain in existence and continue to fulfill their intended charitable purpose.
For more information about how you or your family can enhance charitable giving through one or a combination of these funds, please
