Coronavirus (aka Rona) got you down? You’re not alone! This pandemic has done a great job of stressing people out to the MAX. So, here’s a little blog to remind everyone that helping others is always a mood lifter and a great way to tell Rona she will not get you down!

Here are the top five ways to safely help the community during a pandemic:

  1. Be the calm amidst all the chaos
Have you noticed how most people only want to talk about the pandemic, schools reopening, and politics? These conversations hardly ever further the understanding of any if its participants, and almost always cause more anxiety. Be the subject-changer and end the chaos! Bring your friends and loved ones back to a place of calm with a conversation about ANYTHING else. My best trick to change uncomfortable conversations is by pipping up with a, “Hey! How about those Packers?” Works every time.
  2. Bring back that Midwest nice!
I don’t know if it’s the masks or what, but recently I’m always ignored whenever I say hi to passersby. Simple kindness goes a long way, and just acknowledging those around you reminds people that although we are socially distancing, we still exist and matter. So remember to smize (smile with your eyes) and greet all those you meet!
  3. Check in on your neighbors
If you have neighbors who are strictly social distancing, check in on them. Leave a note with your phone number in their mailbox to offer help with groceries, lawn care, or a chat across the fence.
  4. Be counted in Census 2020!
Time is running out to complete the census, and it literally is the easiest, shortest thing we all can do to help the community. Every person counted positively impacts the amount of funding our area receives for schools, hospitals, and fire departments, helps our leaders plan for our future, and determines how many seats Wisconsin is allocated in the House of Representatives.
  5. Help your favorite nonprofits
Nonprofits are struggling right now, especially those not in the health and human services sector. Without their traditional revenue streams coming in to offset fixed expenses, many have reduced staff to a minimum to hardly scrape by. If you are in a position to make a cash donation, even a very small one,  please do that. If you have a skill and some free time, reach out to your favorite charities and offer your help!

These are pretty easy ways to help yourself by helping others. Try all five and see which is your favorite!
